What Are Full-Arch Dental Implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you are not alone. In fact, tooth loss affects approximately 69% of Americans and is more common as we age. Full-arch, such as all-on-4 dental implants, allows you to replace your entire top or bottom row of teeth.

This includes your molars, premolars, incisors, and canines for a total of fourteen teeth. These implants are usually made of titanium screws that are surgically implanted into your jaw. Once they heal, we can attach a row of porcelain crowns to these implants with an abutment, leaving you with a brand-new smile.

All-on-4 dental implants and similar procedures are often your best option if you need to replace multiple missing teeth. These procedures can reduce discomfort, prevent bone loss, and offer many other benefits. Keep reading to learn more about each of the dental implant procedures we offer.

If you have been missing teeth for an extended period of time, you may experience bone loss in your jawbone, and this can occur unevenly. Additionally, if you have underlying gum disease or other damage, all-on-four dental implants might not be the right choice. Our all-on-x procedure allows us to tailor the number and location of the implants we insert into your jaw to ensure that your prosthetic teeth are firmly attached.

All-on-6 dental implants are similar to all-on-four dental implants, but your dentist will insert six implants into your jawbone instead of four. This may increase the stability of your replacement teeth. Your dentist will help you determine which is better for your needs.

If you have a single missing tooth, your prosthodontist will attach your individual prosthetic to an implant inserted into your jawbone. However, all-on-4 dental implants allow you to replace an entire row of teeth on just four implants.

Why Is It Essential to Replace Missing Teeth?

Losing a tooth can seriously impact your self-esteem, oral health, and otherwise healthy teeth. Missing teeth can quickly lead to significant bone loss in your jaw area and cause other teeth to shift out of place. Bone loss occurs as your body begins to reabsorb your jawbone.

Tooth loss can also impact your speech, lead to poor oral health, and make eating difficult. Additionally, if you wait to have your teeth replaced, it can be more challenging to replace them in the future due to the resulting bone loss.

Benefits of All-on-4 Dental Implants

Dental implants can help restore most of your teeth’s natural function, and you can care for them for just like your natural teeth. You will even continue your bi-annual cleanings with your dentist. In addition, dental implants allow you to:

  • Restore your chewing function
  • Reduce bone loss due to missing teeth
  • Prevent your teeth from shifting
  • Improve speech
  • Improve oral health
  • Reduce bad breath
  • Boost your self-confidence
  • Give you a more youthful appearance
  • Can last for the rest of your life
  • Are a minimally invasive procedure
  • Can improve your quality of life

Dental Implants vs. Dentures

If you are considering permanent tooth replacement, you may also be considering dentures. While dentures can also be an excellent choice, there are many additional benefits to all-on-four dental implants.

Removable dentures tend to be messier and less secure than dental implants. This means they won’t feel like your natural teeth, and you will have a more challenging time with certain foods. Dentures also don’t last as long. Even implant-supported dentures need to be replaced after 10-15 years.

  • Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you have had a consultation for dental implants in the past, you may have been told that you are not a candidate for dental implants. However, due to advanced 3-D scans and other technology, more and more people are eligible for dental implants. As long as you are healthy enough to undergo a tooth extraction, we may be able to help.

  • Will I Need a Bone Graft Before the Procedure?

When you lose a tooth, you typically lose bone mass in your jaw, and up to 25% of that bone loss occurs in the first year. If your teeth have been missing for an extended period of time, it can be more challenging to place your implants. In this case, your doctor may require a bone graft to ensure that there is enough mass to support your implants.

Depending on the anatomy of your mouth, you may also need a sinus lift or other treatment to ensure that your jaw is healthy enough for surgery. We’ll help you determine the best course of action for your situation.

  • How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

As long as you properly care for your dental implants and gums following your treatment, your dental implants should last for decades or even the rest of your life. However, it is essential to continue getting regular dental care to ensure that your jaws and gums remain healthy enough to support your all-on-4 implants.

  • How Long Is the Recovery Process?

Dental implant surgery is typically a minor procedure. While you may be sore following the all-on-4 dental implant procedure and experience some swelling, you will generally be able to return to your regular schedule in a few days. However, it may take a few months for your implants to heal enough for crown placement.

How the All-On-4 Dental Implant Procedure Works

Step 1: Initial Consultation

We’ll start with an in-depth consultation where we will examine your teeth and your medical history. Then we will take some bone scans. These bone scans can help us determine if you are a candidate for dental implants and whether all-on-4, all-on-6, or all-on-x dental implants are right for you.

Step 2: Tooth Removal

Before placing your implants, we’ll need to remove your remaining teeth and treat any underlying gum disease. This allows you to get the best possible results and a healthier smile.

Step 3: Bone Grafting, if Needed

Sometimes, you may need a bone graft if there isn’t enough bone to support your all-on-4 dental implants or a sinus lift if there is insufficient space between your top jaw and sinuses. We will perform these procedures before the implant surgery.

Step 4: Placing the Implant

We typically use general anesthesia to reduce discomfort during the procedure. Then we will surgically insert the base of the implant into your jaw. These implants are usually made from zirconium oxide or titanium. Once we have placed the implant, we can attach the abutment, which will hold the permanent crowns.

Step 5: Creating Your Crowns

After we are done, we will send your scans to the lab so they can create crowns that match your original teeth. Each of our crowns is tailored to your exact needs.

Step 6: Attaching Your Crowns

It will take some time for your implants to heal. Once they are fully healed, we will bring you back for a follow-up appointment and attach your crowns to the abutment. This part of the process is usually quick with minimal discomfort.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Brand New Smile

After we have attached your crowns, you will have a new smile that you will love to show off wherever you go. Contact us today to request an appointment.
