Cleanings and Check-ups

Teeth cleaning, also known as prophylaxis, is a procedure for the removal of tartar (mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine toothbrushing. It is often done by a dental hygienist. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
As to the frequency of cleaning, careful research has not shown that more frequent cleaning leads to better outcomes. A review of the research literature on the question concluded "the research evidence is not of sufficient quality to reach any conclusions regarding the beneficial and adverse effects of routine scaling and polishing for periodontal health and regarding the effects of providing this intervention at different time intervals"
Thus, any general recommendation for a frequency of routine cleaning (e.g. every six months, every year) has no empirical basis Moreover, as economists have pointed out, dentists (or other dental professionals) have an incentive to recommend frequent cleaning because it increases their revenues. Law professor Ian Ayres, author of Super Crunchers, has even posed the question, "Is Tooth Cleaning a Scam?"
Most dental hygienists recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during treatment of dental and other oral disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least every year. This may include yearly, select dental X-rays. See also dental plaque identification procedure and removal. Between cleanings by a dental hygienist, good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities, tartar build-up, and gum disease.
The Importance of Routine Cleanings & Check-Ups
Most people think that as long as they brush their teeth and floss every day, they do not need to visit the dentist. However, professional cleanings and checks are more than just a toothbrush and floss. Arverne Dental is a great place to go for regular cleanings and checks.
Preventing Plaque & Tartar Buildup
There are some areas of your mouth that you can't reach, no matter how hard you try to brush and floss. Over time, plaque, a film of sticky bacteria, can build up in these areas. Plaque, if not removed, hardens to tartar. This can only be removed professionally by a dentist. Regular cleanings will keep plaque and tartar at bay and reduce the risk of gum disease and cavities.
Early Detection of Oral Health Issues
Routine dental checkups with Dr. Lyuba Taff allow you to catch oral health issues in the early stages before they become more serious. During the check-up, Dr. Taft performs a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums to detect any signs of oral cancer, gum disease, or tooth decay. Early detection can lead to more effective treatments and less invasive procedures, which will help preserve your natural teeth.
Maintaining Gum Health
A healthy smile is built on healthy gums. Untreated gum disease (also known as periodontal infection) can cause tooth loss. Regular cleanings remove bacteria and plaque from beneath the gum line, where gum disease usually begins. Dr. Taft's team is skilled at identifying early signs of gingivitis and offering treatments to stop the disease from progressing.
Improving Overall Health:
Oral health and overall health are closely related. Untreated dental problems and poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory infections. Regular dental visits protect your smile and your overall health.

What to Expect During Your Cleaning & Check-Up at Arverne Dental
We strive to make dental cleanings and examinations as stress-free and comfortable as possible. What to expect at your regular visit
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
Our dental hygienists will perform your cleaning. They will remove tartar and plaque from your teeth with specialized tools. Scaling is a process that targets areas of the mouth and gums that are hard to clean. After scaling, your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and make your smile look brighter. Lastly, the hygienist will floss your teeth to remove all plaque and debris from between your teeth.
Comprehensive Oral Examination
After your cleaning, Dr. Lyuba will perform a thorough examination of your mouth. Checking for cavities, assessing your gum health, and checking your mouth for signs of oral cancer or any other abnormalities are all part of this examination. To get a better view of the teeth and their underlying structures, x-rays can be taken. These images allow Dr. Taft to detect problems that are not visible to the naked eye. For example, cavities between teeth, loss of bone, or impacted teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is a serious disease that can be fatal if not detected early. Dr. Taft performs an oral cancer screen as part of each checkup. She will check the tissues in your mouth (lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat) for abnormal growths or discolorations. Further testing may be suggested if any suspicious areas have been identified to rule out pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions.
Personalized Oral Health Recommendations
After your examination and cleaning, Dr. Taft will discuss her findings and recommendations with you. She will discuss your treatment options and work with your schedule and needs to create a plan. Our team will support you in your oral health journey, whether you require restorative measures, like fillings and crowns, or preventive measures, such as fluoride treatments.
How Often Should You Schedule a Cleaning and Check-Up?
The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and checks. Dr. Lyuba may suggest more frequent dental visits depending on the needs of your oral health. Regular monitoring and professional cleanings will be especially beneficial if you have a history of gum disease, cavities, or any other dental issues.
Early and regular dental visits for children are important to ensure proper oral development and instill good oral hygiene habits. Arverne Dental's Dr. Taft, her team, and their experience in treating patients of all ages will make your dental visit a pleasant one for you and the entire family.
